Instead, try to keep the car rolling by reading traffic, and avoid too many stops and starts. Sometimes the best thing to do when you notice a change in the temperature gauge is to pull over and wait for things to cool off.
Water can be added to the cooling system, but only as a last resort to help you get home if the engine is overheating. Obviously, these times will differ depending on the temperature outside, with radiators taking longer to cool in summer than winter.

How do I check the level of the cooling system? How can I tell if my cooling system is leaking? Choose one that contains corrosion inhibitors. The container should state that the contents are suitable for all types of engine , including aluminium blocks or cylinder heads. Replace hoses that show signs of cracking when squeezed. Check all the hose clips See Checking hoses and the radiator cap. If there is corrosion at any junction, remove the hose and clean the metal pipework.
Consider renewing the hose. If you can see slime or dirt in the cooling system, take the opportunity to flush it out. If you have any doubts about the correct operation of the thermostat , check it See How to replace a car thermostat , and renew if faulty.
Let the engine cool and place a container under the drain point. If there is no drain tap on the radiator - or if the tap has stuck unclip and pull off the bottom hose.
Remove the radiator filler cap to speed the flow. Before you start to refill the system, make sure that you have checked and refitted all the hoses, tightened all the hose clips, and closed all drain taps. Pour in the correct amount of antifreeze, then top up with water or mix the antifreeze solution in a watering-can and use that to pour it in.
If your car has an expansion tank , replace the coolant there with the correct mixture, but do not fill the expansion tank to the top. Spread some newspapers on the ground and park the car with the engine and radiator over them, to isolate any leaks. If you have a coolant loss, top up with the correct strength of antifreeze mixture.
As I have outlined, engine coolant removes excess heat from the inside of your engine. Coolant is a mixture of water and antifreeze. If the coolant level becomes too low, it produces excess heat which could cause damage to your engine. You might ask how much coolant should I put in my car.
Read on. Checking your coolant level is very simple. Once your bonnet is open, you need to locate your coolant overflow tank. A water hose is connected to your radiator close to the radiator cap that connects to the overflow tank. It is relatively easy to find. The coolant inside can be green, yellow, pink, orange, red, or gold color. Do not take a wiper reservoir for the coolant reservoir. On the body of the overflow tank, you will find two marks, Full and Low.
These lines tell whether the coolant is low or high. If the coolant is below the low mark, you have to add more coolant to the reservoir. If the engine is hot, there could be pressure in the reservoir, and if you try to open it, it can split out and cause you severe injury. The coolant amount that should be in the overflow tank has to be on the full level — this connotes the coolant is at maximum level.
Unlike the overflow tank with a full and low level indicating when the coolant is low or overfilled, the radiator does not have minimum and maximum levels.
You just have to fill your radiator to the brim. If you notice coolant level low when cold, you have to too up the coolant. Or notice the car running hot , you have to turn off your engine. Allow it to cool down. It will take your engine one to two hours to cool down. Once your engine is cool, open your radiator and overflow tank, top your overflow tank till it gets to the full level.
And top your radiator till it gets to the brim. You have to inspect for coolant leaks with your underhood work light.
