What Locke cons, wheedles and tricks into his possession is strictly for him and his band of fellow con-artists and thieves: the Gentleman Bastards. Together their domain is the city of Camorr. Built of Elderglass by a race no-one remembers, it's a city of shifting revels, filthy canals, baroque palaces and crowded cemeteries.
Home to Dons, merchants, soldiers, beggars, cripples, and feral children. And to Capa Barsavi, the criminal mastermind who runs the city. But there are whispers of a challenge to the Capa's power. A challenge from a man no one has ever seen, a man no blade can touch. The Grey King is coming. Even such a master of the sword as the Thorn of Camorr. Father Chains , who is known even to Locke as an eccentric and flamboyant blind priest of Perelando, takes Locke in, and Locke quickly discovers that Chains is not actually blind, not actually a priest of Perelando, and doesn't actually live in the bland temple but rather in an Elderglass burrow of apartments located just below the temple.
There he leads the Gentleman Bastards, a specialized gang of thieves in training that Capa Barsavi believes to be sneak thieves. Already in the gang are Calo and Galdo Sanza , a pair of mischiveous twins, and Sabetha, who is away for several months at the start of Locke's time with the gang.
He doesn't realize until she returns that Sabetha is the same girl as Beth, the girl he became infatuated with at Shade's Hill and who he believed to be dead.
Father Chains educates his wards on all topics imaginable, except actual theft. He teaches them languages, mathematics, cuisine, culture, and sees that they are made familiar with the basic rites of each of the temples of the twelve official Therin gods. He also reveals that he himself is a priest of the heretical nameless Thirteenth god, the patron of thieves. He takes Locke to meet Capa Barsavi. Locke impresses Barsavi at their meeting, and develops a friendship with Barsavi's daughter Nazca.
Chains has explained to Locke the intricacies of the Secret Peace , through which the thieves of Barsavi's empire are forbidden from stealing from nobles, soldiers, or the city watch, in return for which, the Duke does not make any coordinated moves against Barsavi's gangs.
After the meeting, Chains confesses to Locke that it should be obvious to Locke by now that he intends the Gentleman Bastards to be "Nothing less than a fucking ballista bolt right through the heart of Vencarlo Barsavi 's precious secret peace.
Locke flourishes under Chains' tutelage, and outdoes himself when arranging the theft of a corpse, commanded by Chains as a means to repay a debt he owes a black alchemist, arranging an elaborate scheme involving a staged pickpocketing of Locke as a religious "Acolyte" to draw from a fountain of charity of the merchants of the prosperous Vedanza district.
Shortly after Jean Tannen joins the gang. After some initial tension, the two become fast friends. Of course, the money the Salvaras paid " Lukas Fehrwight " Locke Lamora actually went straight to the Elderglass cellar underneath the Temple of Perelandro.
Barsavi has locked himself in his ship because the mysterious Gray King is killing Barsavi's most trusted Garristas. During the meeting the Gray King delivers Barsavi's daughter Nazca to the meeting dead and pickled in a barrel. Barsavi beats Locke severely and leaves him to drown in the barrel his daughter was killed in. Later, as Barsavi is celebrating the Gray King's false death, Barsavi's bodyguards, the Berengias sisters turn on Barsavi and kill him.
The Gray King, who is revealed to be the brother of the Berengias sisters, appears and announces himself as Capa Raza. Locke is saved by Jean and Bug who then head off to their secret hideout.
Here Bug is killed and the Sanza twins are found murdered. Locke and Jean swear revenge on the Gray King. Jean finds out that Capa Raza is loading all of his wealth onto a quarantined plague barge.
Before he can get to Locke to tell him, Jean is attacked by the Berengias sisters. Jean kills the Berengias sisters but is severely wounded.
Locke needs resources and therefore needs to finish the Don Salvara Game. When Locke returns to meet Jean, Jean is under the control of the Falconer , who knows Jean's true name.
Killing a Bondsmage results in every other Bondsmage coming after you until you are dead. Locke decides not to kill the Falconer, he cuts off his fingers and tongue, leaving him unable to cast spells and therefore freeing Jean. Meanwhile, Capa Raza is planning on getting revenge on all of the nobles of Camorr. Capa Raza gives the Duke Nicovante four sculptures, which are time bombs in disguise. Inside the bombs is a substance which upon contact would turn everyone into ' gentled ' mindless creatures.
Locke races back to the celebration which he has just escaped from and convinces Vorchenza to let him defuse the bombs. He tells the Spider that Raza's money is on a waste barge in exchange for his freedom and convinces her to sink the plague ship as Raza will use it to infect the city. Next, Locke fights Raza. Locke is outmatched and nearly killed. Locke distracts Raza for a second and is able to land a fatal blow.
When the Spider finds no treasure, she realizes that the treasure has been sunk. Locke devices a plan to rob the wealthiest man in Tel Verrar, namely the master of the famous gambling house The Sinspire , Requin. The preparations for the game takes two entire years during which Locke and Jean cement their false identities of Leocanto Kosta and Jerome de Ferra.
Here we get our first true glimpse of Elderglass as Scott Lynch describes to us the five towers. I recommend that you bookmark page 19 for anytime you need a refresher of the architecture of Camorr and a reminded of the scale of the Elderglass buildings. Camorr is one of the main Therin city-states. In is located to the South of Therin and has a population of 88, Not much is known about its past, but there was a race that came before the Camorri that built a huge network of bridges, towers and mazes from a material known as Elderglass.
This glass is unbreakable and therefore the city must be built around it — however, it is worth noting that there are broken structures meaning that something in the past must have been able to destroy it, but there is no sign of that either.
The most striking piece of Elderglass are the 5 towers — the smallest of which is 80 feet wide and feet tall. To give you an idea of just how big these towers must be: Piza is feet and the Statue of Liberty, base and all, is feet. So, the novels setting is far from your typical medieval one.
Chains puts on a dramatic display, begging for money as a priest of Perelandro — Lord of the Overlooked — and Locke has obvious admiration for him. The two twins who sit on the steps beside him,Calo and Galdo Sanza, are described as about a year older than Locke with olive skin and black hair, which is apparently the true mark of Camorri.
His having bought the Shark Tooth — that was issued by the Capa — means that Father Chains can have Locke killed at any time he likes — no questions asked. Chains essentially owns his life. Deception and misdirection are the true tools of a thief — they allow you to work even when you are in your 50s — like chains.
First though, Chains wants to know the truth about how Locke ended up getting two of his fellow orphans killed. A good confidence game takes three months to plan, three weeks to rehearse and will feature three seconds where the victims trust is won or lost forever. This scam could land the boys 20, crowns and these three seconds near.
Don Lorenzo Salvara is about to run into Locke Lamora, being strangled by one twin, and Jean Tannan, currently getting kicked by the other twin. There is also mention of a boy named bug acting as lookout. Jean is described as 16 stone and top heavy. Bug is noted as being a lanky and mop-headed 12 year old.
Locke is medium height and build, cropped short hair and less olive than Jean or Bug — looked like a proper Therin. Might pass for a very tanned Vadran. The boys are in the main commercial area, there is a waterway, the Via Camorrazza, leading to the shifting market. Besides them is a temple where the Don is making an offering — as he does every Penance Day once a week — a promise to his dead mother.
However, Bug spots the watch approaching before the Don exits the temple. So, he dives off the roof and pretends to be injured. Whistles are blown, alarms are sounded, but they are after Bug, not Locke and Co — so Bug has done his job leading them away. The Don exits the temple to the scene of Locke being strangled and Jean being kicked to death as planned. As planned, the twins back off and escape by climbing over an alleyway wall. Locke passes himself as a foreigner, Lukas Fehrwight, from the house of bel Auster, of the canton of Emberlain and the Kingdom of the Seven Marrows.
He is dressed elaborately and even talks in the Vadran language. It is apparent that Locke is now the conman that Chains told him he would be — he is cautious, able to trick with his words and obvious careful planning — although, it must be said the fight scene was somewhat elaborate.
The Don feels shamed that Lukas was attacked because the Temple district is usually safe. Lukas tells him it must have been a tip of for their house is known for transporting very expensive goods. When the Don asks if he can help Lukas in anyway, he asks the Don if he can help set up a meeting with Don Jacobo.
They have fought to blood on a number of occasions — Lukas is obviously trying to make Salvara think he is going to offer him some kind of deal.
Galdo turns up disguised as Evante Eccari a Solicitor from Razona district who has known Lukas for a long time and helped with his dealings. Eventually, Don Salvara bites and tells Lukas that he might be interested in hearing about his deal. We move forward in time a little and everyone is worried about Bug until he ends up being delivered in a wine barrel.
Bug had to pay a decent amount of money to be brought back in the barrel, however informs Jean and co that he stole some of the money back whilst being stored in the building of the man who rolled him back. Calo informs Bug that those are the 4 most deadly words in the Therin language.
Even now it seems that there is a feeling that the only person who gets away with Locke Lamora games is Locke. Chains is asking Locke about the deaths he caused. Locke explains that Veslin and Gregor were their names. Veslin came first, he was older and took advantage of the younger ones by staying at home and taking a percentage of their retrievals for himself. As time progressed he began taking more and even keeping some for himself to spend of the girls who sit in the windows.
Locke managed to steal a white iron coin — a full crown — from a Vadran. These coins are about what a Watchman will make in a whole month of working plus overtime. Chains then asks if Locke would like him to point out where he fucked everything up and why most of his little friends will be dead by morning. Back in the present, Lukas and the Don are on pleasure barge — there are rope dancers on a boat to their left. Dona Sofia flirts a bit with Locke, but Locke knows this was prearranged by the Don to fluster him a little.
Calculating where as the Don was impulsive. Every 4th Idlers day there is no work done. Instead there is a kind of festival.
Because there is no elderglass ampitheatre there are observation barges and pleasure barges instead. The Duke pays for it all because it pulls the fangs of unrest from the city before they can fester. Minor fights can be had without any repercussions and people can move on. Also, criminals are invited to fight in bouts where the odds are stacked against them in order to reduce sentences.
Those who have committed terrible crimes are fed to Devilfish. The Black Table are so powerful that they pretty much rule already and now that the Graf has left with his army — they feel ready to take it from him. We find out the the House of Bel Auster are producers of the finest, most expensive brandy available. Locke explains that it is expected that this civil war will result in the destruction of the Vineyards and loss of the land that can produce the expensive brandy for 10, 20 or even 30 years.
Lukas and co want to abandon ship before shit hits the fan. As a gesture of good will, Lukas provides Don with a bottle of Brandvin Austershalin , which is apparently very rare. The Don is even more shocked when Lukas provides a bottle of unaged Brandy. This stuff has been tasted by almost no one. It is supposed to be aged for 7 years and the location it is kept in for that time is top secret.
