Grasso was born on May 10, , in Windsor Locks, Connecticut. She earned a bachelor's degree in economics and sociology in and master's degree in , both from Mount Holyoke College.
Grasso served in the Connecticut General Assembly from , and was the first women to be elected floor leader of that body in In , she was elected Connecticut's secretary of state and served in that office until She was elected to the U.
House of Representatives for Connecticut's 6th District in and served until her election as governor in In , Grasso was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and resigned from office. That creative involvement invigorated her with a desire to improve the public good, and that desire became an integral part of the life of this young woman from Windsor Locks. The intense studying, the opportunities to visit and observe industrial labor as well as savor the provocative and thoughtful words and ideas of the Mount Holyoke faculty provided Ella with an outstanding education and preparation for her life of public service.
It was at Mount Holyoke that she set out to do all those great things which many aim to do in life.
